How to Clear a Blocked Milk Duct

Milk Ducts are the tubes in the nipple that breast milk is delivered to from the alveoli (storage sacs). When a baby feeds, the hormone, oxytocin triggers the letdown reflex, causing breast milk to move from the alveoli to the nipple. A "blocked milk duct" is when excess milk in the breast causes inflammation, resulting in engorged and swollen breast tissue that can surround and close a duct, leading to slower milk flow from that area of the breast.

Here are 7 methods of clearing a Blocked Milk Duct

Gentle Massage

Applying gentle massage to the engorged area before and during a feed can help to clear the blockage by stimulating milk flow. Massage should be done in the direction of the nipple, starting from behind the blocked area and moving towards the nipple. A warm compress applied to the area before massage may also help.

Experiment with different feeding positions

Different positions may allow milk to flow more freely from the affected area. For example, lying on the side with the affected breast on top, or using gravity to help the baby feed by leaning forward with the affected breast hanging down.

Pump or hand express after a feed

(If baby is not feeding effectively) This can help to fully empty the breast and reduce the risk of further blockages. Ideally a new-born should feed between 8-12 times in 24 hours.

Cold therapy

Cold therapy between breastfeeds, can reduce pain and swelling.

Pain relief

There are medications compatible with breastfeeding that can be taken for pain, paracetamol and Ibuprofen may be taken, contact your GP if you have concerns.

Rest

Selfcare is essential, rest well and look after yourself and remember to eat and drink well.

Feed your baby

Feeding your baby often to keep milk flowing, at least every two hours (Mitchell et al, 2022).

Consider seeking help from a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist. They can provide personalized support and advice to help clear the blockage and prevent it from recurring.
